Introducing the Solo Fleet

The National Solo is a classic one-design single-handed dinghy, and although the design by Jack Holt dates to 1956, the boat is more popular today than ever before. Wood was the original construction material and is still a very popular choice for many, whilst others prefer the lower-maintenance options of glass fibre (GRP) and fibre reinforced plastic (FRP) available from a number of builders throughout the UK. The majority of Solos are in the UK, but the class is also sailed in Holland and Australia.

At 3.78 metres (12ft 5) long and weighing 70 kg (154 lbs), the Solo is very easy to rig and launch by one person. It is essentially a very simple boat with a single fully battened sail, pivoting centreboard and rudder, and ample boom height for the less agile sailor. The simple yet effective controls enable a complete range of sail settings for most conditions.

You dont need to be a gorilla to sail a Solo  in fact it is best sailed with brain cells rather than brawn, and is a great single-hander for beginners who don’t want to be permanently wet! At South Cerney we have Solo sailors spanning 4 decades in age sailing boats that have cost anything from £150 to over £5000. Theres a wealth of knowledge and advice in the Club supported by regular training events for Solo owners, helping to make a very sociable and friendly class.

Solo sailing gives much pleasure to many  some enjoy going out for a cruise, whilst others enjoy very close and competitive racing. Solos make up one of the most active racing fleets in the Club, with events for all levels of expertise from novice to expert. We have our own class starts, own series throughout the year, and in October host the final race meeting in the Solo Western Area series  always well supported with very close racing throughout the fleet.
